Sixtina luck suerte

Hi Victor,

I am happy to have the opportunity to collaborate with you and publish my post „No more than luck“ on your website.
All the best for you.

Sixtina

Here is the plain text and a photo:

What is “luck” for you? Passing a test…? Going to university…? Winning the lottery…? For some people having a house, food and something to drink is luck…basic human rights you would think, but not everyone is fortunate enough to have these in their daily life. Why so, you might ask? Because it seems that they are unlucky…just unlucky to be born in a country where these things are not taken care of and are as organized as good as in other countries. My travels to Mexico, India, China and South Africa were just some destinations that opened my eyes. Countries which are way different than my own.
It is just now that I realize how lucky I am to be born in Germany (even though I don’t live there anymore), where there are more rules than people. A country where I have unlimited opportunities to become the person I really want to be, study or work, feel safe and have a place to stay, no matter what. It all seems to be a matter of luck where you are born. Of course everyone can choose to study…of course everyone who can afford it can buy a house…of course everyone who works hard or knows the right people can establish a career…but NO ONE can choose the country they are born in and along with it their nationality. It was the moment when my polish friend said: “Well you are German, everyone would hire you!”, at that moment I realized how fortunate I am only because of my nationality, its “reputation” and stereotype around the world.
I think I will never be able to fully understand the conditions and fears some people live in on a daily basis. In the extremes, people are facing an everyday battle to survive…not to starve to death or die of thirst. I’m honest, I cannot think about the bad conditions some people live in all the time as this would be too depressing in the long-term, neither can I change the world but we all together can contribute to a better one with small gestures such as being polite to each other, not too greedy but giving and not exploiting other people. I don’t only mean to talk about the extremes but also about your own country. Certainly there are people less fortunate than you who will be happy about your helping hand, a new pair of pants or shoes.
We tend to define ourselves by the amount of materialistic things we possess. The more the better! The newer the better! I am not saying that I don’t belong to today’s consuming society as well, but since I had the chance to travel so much and live in many different countries (USA, Netherlands, Mexico, Spain, Ireland) it really helped me to look at things differently. Traveling helps me to re-evaluate my possessions…do I really need a new phone when my “old” one is still working fine? Do I really need the same pair of shoes just in a different color when I already have another two similar looking black ones? Do these designer sunglasses make me happy or is it the moment when I am singing out loud at the John Legend concert?
Be as greedy as you want to be and once you have enough for yourself share the rest. Give it away! Think twice if you really need this right now or maybe at a later point in time. Due to the consuming society we live in, people are high in possessions and it is hard to let go sometimes…but while for you it might just be another pair of shoes you don’t even remember that you have it, it might be the first one for another person. Think about how many clothes you have in your closet that you only wore once? I certainly have quite a few.
I am not saying we have to feel guilty or bad for the things we do/have or start to live a different lifestyle now…I just want to make you aware of your luck, be thankful and appreciate more what you are given, for example your nationality, which is far beyond your control. Or to not waste your energy complaining about worthless little things such as a bad internet connection (yes I know we need it for our jobs or to chat with friends), working hours (at least we got a job!) or rude people (there will always be exceptions!)…it just kind of isn’t worth mentioning when thinking about what other “real” struggles people go through daily.
However, what I really want to make clear with this blog post is the following: It is important to understand that “we” are not better than them…that there is no difference between us and them besides the fact that we are lucky enough to be born in a developed country where human rights are taken seriously and efforts are made to grant us a “good” and fulfilled life.

Travel is the only thing that makes you richer.

I now get better and better in understanding this quote. I believe I am richer than a person who has everything in terms of possessions/things. In my opinion it has more value to help each other than possess millions of things I cant even handle or keep track of myself. I’m not saying that I dont have a laptop, phone and millions of clothes I can’t even wear but I am trying to either think twice if I really need this “thing” right now or at least get rid of my “old” things first. Why do I need two phones? Or two laptops? Or do I really need this blouse in three different colors when I already possess two which look alike? I am one person and can only work on one device, wear one blouse and walk around in one pair of shoes at a time…but of course I like to have the choice…who doesn’t!
I hope I could encourage you all a little bit with this post and that you are all busy now selling/giving away things you don’t need anymore. I would also love to hear about your thoughts about this post.

Viajarme ayuda a volver a evaluar mis posesiones...
